The Duel (a studio performance) [2006]
0.0Ê the first idea i can recall about this piece was this:Êa duel, a doctor, and a drum set; a couple of tables and microphones.Ê and dialogue.

0.1Ê so, the piece is about duels -- binary systems, buckshot, pistols, costumes, stability of systems with more than two elements,Êwitnesses, affairs, revenge, justice, emotional rages, 20 paces, "this town ain't big enough for the two of us" (all included).

1.Ê the structure of the piece is based on scientific proofs -- start with a hypothesis and try to string together indisputable facts to justify said hypothesis.Ê maybe we'll manage to complete a proof, maybe not.Ê (if you check out the last piece bryce & i did together, you'll see that we did not succeed in reaching our goal. but we did come close.)

2.Ê the overall proof will likely be about some aspect of dueling -- does it serve its purpose, is it honorable, something like that. Êbut i'm sure that there will be many sub-proofs as well and many red herring proofs in which we go off-track or fail wildly to prove anything.Ê there will surely be a lot of backtracking in the piece itself.ÊÊ

3. there will be dances.Ê they will be amazing.

4. since a lot of the other guiding ideas bryce and i have come up with are scientific in nature (theorums, equations, and the like), i thought maybe a bit of wikipedia would be applicable, hmm... 1 2 3 4 (NB, bryce is indeed a scientist in the eyes of the law, having graduated from physics school.)

5. Much of the research for this piece comes from Barbara Holland's excellent tome, Gentlemen's Blood: A History of Duelling from Swords at Dawn to Pistols at Dusk.
